In 2007, Satoshi Kanazawa published a paper “taller soldiers are more likely to survive battle and that taller parents are more likely to have sons”.
This was based on his research of British Army records from the First World War, which showed that

“surviving soldiers were on average more than one inch (3.33 cm) taller than fallen soldiers”

Distribution of heights of soldiers based on survival

A second reason might be that height is also correlated with intelligence(It has been found that increases in average height, in response to improved nutrition, have been accompanied by an increase in brain size, and is one explanation for an overall rise in measured intelligence among all tested populations that has been called the Flynn effect). More intelligent soldiers might reach a higher military rank reducing the chance of being involved in dangerous situations due to their relative seniority.
